Mark Wahlberg, Marion Cotillard & Zoe Saldana Eye Guillaume Canet/James Gray Project ‘Blood Ties’

By • Filed in: Articles

Given the Hollywood-friendly slickness of his directorial efforts to date, it was only a matter of time before French actor Guillaume Canet made a film in the U.S. The star of “The Beach” and “Love Me If You Dare,” among many others, stepped behind the camera to much acclaim with 2002’s Cesar-nominated “Mon Idole,” the 2007 thriller “Tell No One” (which Ben Affleck is planning to remake), and followed it up with 2010’s “Little White Lies,” all of which showed an international sensibility.

As revealed a while back, Canet’s been working on his English-language directorial debut, a remake a of the 2008 thriller “Les Liens Du Sang,” in which he starred, a 70s-set drama about two brothers, one a cop, the other a criminal fresh out of the joint. Canet’s been working on the script with “The Yards” and “We Own The Night” helmer James Gray, and according to Screen Daily, it seems that a cast is starting to come together.

Sales company Wild Bunch are close to coming on to rep Canet’s project, and it’s said that Mark Wahlberg (who worked with Gray on both “The Yards” and “We Own The Night”) is circling the role of one of the brothers, with Cotillard and “Avatar” lead Zoe Saldana also linked to the film—Cotillard, of course, being Canet’s partner, and therefore something of a no-brainer. Screen Daily say that it’s unclear if Canet will again star in the film, but we imagine that, if Wahlberg’s playing one brother, it’s unlikely, unless the director’s got a doozy of an American accent up his sleeve, although it’s possible he might take a smaller role, as originally hinted. Which means that, assuming all the linked cast members sign on, there’s still one big part to cast, and we imagine the talent will be lining up, considering the caliber of names already involved.

First Look: Bradley Cooper & Zoe Saldana in Writer Drama ‘The Words’

By • Filed in: Articles, Stills, The Words

Ohhh, the words, how they pain me! Waterfall Media & Benaroya Pictures have released a first look photo from the indie drama The Words, starring Bradley Cooper as a writer who, at the peak of his literary success, discovers the price he must pay for stealing another man’s work. The photo features Cooper in the embrace of Zoe Saldana as Dora, not shining much light on the story, but at least the characters. The cast includes Olivia Wilde, Dennis Quaid, Ben Barnes and Jeremy Irons as the man whose work is stolen, but none of them have been seen in this.

Tight Jeans, Red Lips & Zoe Saldana’s Unstoppable Swagger

By • Filed in: Articles

Do you remember a time in your youth where you felt different than every other human? No matter who you are it’s a part of life that comes with the territory of growing up. Zoe Saldana addresses this outsider “alien” feeling in her a directorial role with Glamour Reel Moments. Her emotionally moving short film “KAyLien” touches on autism and the notion that ‘patience is love’ while trailing a young girl’s social struggles. Glamour Reel Moments aims to empower women by giving female actresses the opportunity to go behind the camera to bring a reader’s story to life. MyFDB recently talked with Zoe about this empowering project and what it was like to be in the director’s chair.

MyFDB: Given Glamour Reel Moments are derived from reader submissions, what inspired you about this particular life story to create the “KAyLien” character and script?
ZS: What inspired me was my niece, who is 8 years old and this past school year she was getting bullied in school. Then there was a letter that one of the readers submitted and we chose it because it related to a topic that’s very close to my family and my heart, and that’s autism. My ballet teacher, who’s like my second mom, [has a] son with autism and we’ve gotten to witness what it’s like to care for a child with that condition, but also see the child living in a world that’s completely different…So that inspired all of that.

MyFDB: Were there any pivotal moments or scenes on set where you were emotionally moved? And given the emotion with the story line, what are you hoping viewers will take way from this short?
ZS: There were moments. My friend Frankie Flowers, who is my best friend and my colleague, he’s the one that wrote the short. Frankie and I wanted to truly have the characters of the parents involved in this child’s life. So when we got the actors, Bradley Cooper, Malin Ackerman along with Kelli Barksdale (the actress that played KAyLien), they were in the kitchen as a family and even though they were tending to a child that’s different, she’s not affectionate to them and she’s quiet, they still loved their child and they’re still just as excited for her first day of school as they would be with any other child. That to me was very emotional. That’s what I feel when I see parents that have children with autism or any other disability, they still love their child and they enjoy their child so much.

MyFDB: How did you prepare to step behind the camera? Did you find yourself referencing the techniques of other directors you’ve worked with in the past?
ZS: Oh Absolutely! I was referencing a bunch of things I’ve worked with and other directors on their projects, like motion capture, prosthetics, stunts, and all these things that I wanted to incorporate. And even though I love films that are very dramatic and have sort of an emotional tone, I like it when it involves action and fiction. And that’s what I did; I stayed true to what I love about film making. It was a lot of work. It was creating the alien look, the color of the alien skin, would she have teeth or not because we planned on adding some special effects to the piece, and rehearsing a stunt. Helping the actor while she climbed the tree. It was three hectic days, but it was so awesome.

MyFDB: The Glamour project is known for launching directorial debuts (17 to date) and since this your first, do you plan on pursuing other opportunities behind the camera?
ZS: Actually this was my second, I co-directed three episodes of an internet series called “The Ropes” with my sister Cisely. So I got my feet wet for the very first time earlier this year and then when the Glamour opportunity came along I jumped on it and she jumped on as the producer, which I was really elated about.

A to Zoë: Everything You Wanted to Know about Zoë Saldana

By • Filed in: Articles, Interviews

I grew up a bunhead, the code name for ballet dancers who wear their hair in a top knot morning, noon, and night. Anyway, the fact I had just met Zoë Saldana, one of the actresses from Center Stage, a movie that I was basically OBSESSED with while growing up, put me on cloud nine—we talked about our bunheaded pasts and she was so cool and down to earth it was like talking to a friend. So down to earth, in fact, that I realized I had just told her that I still perform periodically with a dance group here in the city, and one that’s quite unusual. “Wow, I just told Zoë Saldana I still Ukrainian folk dance,” I thought to myself, horrified. Luckily, while I was spilling my secrets that humid afternoon, so was Zoë, who opened up about her family, fragrance, and her beauty faves in general.

Oh my god it’s so gross out today. “You know, I love being in a humid environment—but not like tropical humidity. I like New York and East Coast humidity because living in the West Coast, trust me, you will prefer this over July heat any day where your lips start to chap, your nails and hair break, and your skin always feels itchy.”

Well, at least you’re glowing all the time! Speaking of glow—your skin is so beautiful, how do you keep it looking so flawless? “I think washing your face twice a day at least is the most important thing to do, especially when you live in a city because there’s so much pollution. Then there’s s moisturizing and wearing sunblock. I’m actually one of those people that really enjoys taking care of their skin. I don’t see it as work, but really just as part of life, just like brushing your teeth.”

So what are some of your most trusted skincare products? “I’ve always used Cetaphil cleanser and moisturizer. My skin’s not very sensitive, but because I travel so much, it sometimes reacts to the change in environments. I’ve also been using La Prairie Cellular Power Infusion. It makes my skin feel rejuvenated.”

Do you ever use any of those high-tech devices on your skin? “No, my go-to tool I use is a small white towel to wash my face. I buy them in bulk every time I go to Costco.”

Do you get facials regularly? “I do, at least once a month. I go to this amazing girl in Los Angeles who works at the Mid Valley Dermatology center. I’m very particular, so I won’t go to a place unless I find someone I can trust, but she’s amazing because she really looks after your skin. I hate when someone overloads my face with products or tries to oversell me crap.”

What sort of treatments do you get? “I’ll do whatever the person that I trust tells me I need, but I don’t like to get extractions every time because I like to encourage my body to do things on its own. I do love when they use the steam to open up my pores, and microdermabrasion treatments. I’ve been hooked on the diamond machine since I was a teenager when my mom and I used to go to a place in Queens together that used one.”

Zoe Saldana’s new venture an ‘IMDB for fashion’

By • Filed in: Articles

In “Avatar,” she was the fearless, blueberry-hued heroine whose intensity captured our attention. Now Zoe Saldana is bringing that same passion to style.

The accomplished actress has teamed up with her fiancé, former model Keith Britton, to help bring order to the glamorous, envy-inducing mess that is often the fashion world.

The couple’s new website, My Fashion Database (MyFDB.com), aims to be to fashion what IMDb is to entertainment, organizing the sometimes chaotic universe of models, photographers, designers and brands into a user-friendly resource. Before MyFDB, there was no central online database tracking the industry’s movers and shakers — a lack that insiders, fashion fans and even Saldana found confusing.

“There were times when [my fiancé and I] were frustrated to know which photographer was shooting [us] that day,” the actress told TODAY.com. “In Hollywood, I can’t live without IMDb; thirty minutes before I go out to meet a director, I look up what studios he’s worked with, what movie he wrote … I wanted to do the same for fashion. “

MyFDB users can search through ad campaigns, magazine photo spreads, professional profiles and other information about more than 5,000 brands, 60,000 industry workers and 60 different job titles. “People forget that there’s a lot of effort that takes place in the fashion industry,” said Saldana. “There are a lot of people that come together to build a brand, campaign editorial or fashion spread.”

More than just a useful contact or crediting tool, MyFDB even enables users to shop the looks (just hover over an image and you’ll discover the products’ name, price and website). And in coming months, Saldana intends to add a vintage section that will play homage to iconic images and famous campaigns of yore.

For Saldana, whose mother and grandmother were seamstresses, enthusiasm for style is only natural — it’s in her blood, her city. As a native New Yorker, Saldana recalls growing up surrounded by copies of Vogue or Vanity Fair, inspiring her to design a clothing line with her sisters as a child. “If I’m going to do something, it’s full-on,” she said.

The actress and her fiancé hope their growing database will provide one-stop shopping for fashion fans – and that it might just curb the plethora of stolen images all over fashion blogs. Though incredibly supportive of designers and labels, the online fashion community has rarely offered proper credits.

“When you do a Google search for Calvin Klein or Gucci, you get all those Tumblrs just copying all those images,” Britton explained. “We need less images — and more credits.”

From Center Stage To BA: CollegeCandy Interviews Zoe Saldana

By • Filed in: Articles, Interviews

I remember watching Center Stage the summer before sixth grade with all of my dance friends and seeing Zoe Saldana as the feisty Eva Rodriguez. Girl was fierce. I wanted to be her and will forever give her credit for my sassy-pants attitude. While she appeared in a ton of movies after Center Stage like Crossroads, Drumline, and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, her career didn’t blow up until 2009. Two massive blockbusters, Star Trek and Avatar, launched Zoe into super-stardom. She’s now every Comic Con go-ers dream, whether they’re fantasizing about the sexy space goddess Uhura or the phenomenally hot (and blue) Neytiri. Zoe has it going on. Her newest film, Colombiana, is in theaters now. You can see her kick ass as the gorgeous Cataleya, who becomes an assassin after her parents are murdered. She’s definitely a force to be reckoned with.

Recently we had the opportunity to discuss some hot topics with Zoe, and here’s what she said:

1. Who inspires you most?

My family, my mother and sisters have all inspired me. They have all been supportive and by my side through everything. I learn from them and they are my best friends.

2. If you could give yourself 5 years ago some advice, what would it be?

I would probably say even if things don’t always go your way, still believe in yourself and keep trying to move forward.

3. What did you think you would be doing now when you were 18?

I was a trained dancer for years but knew that I had this desire to continue performing and loved the creative outlet of acting. I always wanted to do something that I could express myself, challenge myself, and do something creative.

4. What advice do you have for aspiring actresses?

I think I would say that if you really want it badly then believe in yourself, be strong, keep learning and don’t be afraid to take chances.

5. What’s the worst advice you’ve ever gotten?

That I should just stay in my comfort zone.

6. What’s your biggest turn off?

I think ignorance is a huge turn off.

Zoe Saldana Will Help You Find A Stylist

By • Filed in: Articles, Interviews

Zoe Saldana might be better known for her day job as a successful actress, but she’s also translated her burgeoning fashion interests into a second job as the founder/partner of My Fashion Database. Two years ago, when Saldana launched the site, along with her fiancé, former model Keith Britton, and the help of their close friend Jordan Glassberg, they were simply trying to provide fast, efficient answers to their own style questions: Who shot that editorial in V magazine from September 2008? Who was the manicurist for the recent Lindsey Wixson spread in i-D? This month, MyFDB, dubbed “fashion’s IMDB,” was relaunched with expanded features, including the ability to view ad campaigns and immediately shop the looks. Tonight, the actress will celebrate the relaunch with, what else, a party in New York as fashion week here comes to a close. Saldana spoke to Style.com about MyFDB, mused over a Prabal collaboration, and the next job title she wants: intern.
—Kristin Studeman
What prompted you to create MyFDB?
The initial idea came about in 2006. It came from our desire to cater to the things that were missing for us. As an actress it was hard for me to feel so aloof on what goes on in fashion. Every time you leave your house, you are wearing clothes and you have to create an image. We wanted to give people all the info they need for that.

Are there any issues in particular you were trying provide answers for with MyFDB?
Yes—what am I going to wear? Besides Style.com, which is so informative, no one else out there is really giving you information like this. With MyFDB, you can find out who is this photographer, who are the stylists that work with certain brands, who are the hair and makeup people that I might find interesting. It’s for things like that that are hard to find. There wasn’t that one site to where you could find out Lara Stone’s editorials, who does she have a contract with, etc.

What is the most useful feature of your site?
I love that MyFDB has the largest directory of fashion people and companies out there. That, to me, is one of the best features. It just gives you access without taking away the class and the poise that fashion has. It’s not a social network. I would say it’s classier than that, maybe that’s not the right word, but it’s a useful tool for people.

What features do you hope to add to the site in the near future?
I would like to provide a chance to see vintage magazines from back in the day and see how magazines have evolved according to our cultural and political evolution. That would be pretty cool, right?

I know you have been asked before if you would design your own collection and you sound hesitant. What about a collaboration with a designer, like your good friend Prabal Gurung?
That is something that I would love to do. I would only do it if I could collaborate with someone like Prabal. He’s like a little Meryl Streep when it comes to fashion—he is just stellar. There are many amazing designers that are completely prolific. To sit and be in the same room as them when they are putting their collections together would be really cool. From Tom Ford to Riccardo Tisci at Givenchy, those guys have paved the way. It would be amazing actually to do an internship.

I am guessing any and all of those designers would love to have Zoe Saldana as their intern. Are you serious?
I would get them coffee just so I could listen. I have been to Francisco Costa’s work studio in New York and to see him working, it’s wonderful. They [designers] are true pirates and rock stars. They are kind of like Nascar drivers. There is no such thing as an off-season and they are racing year round. Not many people understand that.
